Tips for a great meeting.
Keep everyone involved. If all you wanted was one person’s opinion, you wouldn’t have invited everyone else, right?
Try to learn names. “What do you think, What’s-Your-Face?” isn’t very personable.
Take notes. Assign someone to write down everything. No, it’s not a trial, but forgetting an important idea is an error.
Discuss next steps. Nothing is worse after a great meeting than doing nothing after a great meeting.
Watch body language. If some people are snoring, they probably need a break.
Encourage debate, discourage argument. Note: Throwing the stapler would constitute argumentative.
Get feedback. Of course you’re the smartest person in the room, but they don’t have to know that.
Eat together. Eating is natural, eating is fun, eating is best when it’s more than one.
Stick to the allotted time. People have dinner plans, yoga sessions, movie tickets. We hope you do too!
Use visual aids. Yes, you are fantastic looking, but a few well-chosen visuals will help make your point.
Define the purpose. The last thing you want to hear during lunch break is “Wait, what are we talking about?”
Send background material in advance. Unless you want your meeting to feel like a visit to the library.
Break the ice. “There once was a lady from Nantucket” is not a good icebreaker.
Stay on topic. Although a healthy debate on whether or not your team should’ve gone for it on 4th down is great, it won’t make your meeting as successful as it could be.
